SUMMARY:Stepping On: Group A (Thursday April 7 - May 26)
DESCRIPTION:Falls are the leading cause of injury and hospitalization for trauma — as well as trauma-related death — among older adults. If you are 65 or older and are concerned about falls\,  this workshop provides information on keeping balance\, the causes of falls\, and dangers to look out for. Topics covered include: \n\n\n\n   •  Simple and fun balance and strength training   •  The role that vision plays in keeping your balance   •  How medications can contribute to falls   •  What to look for in safe footwear   •  How to eliminate fall hazards in your home \n\n\n\nWe meet in person for 2 hours every week in small groups for 7 weeks.At this time we are only offering Stepping On in person but must be prepared to go virtually if needed. You must have reliable internet access\, a computer with a web camera\, microphone and speaker to allow for videoconferencing. SUMMARY:Walk with a Doc in Topeka
DESCRIPTION:This doctor-led group is a fun and safe place to hear briefly about an important health topic and enjoy a walk outside with a physician each month. \n\n\n\nThis Saturday\, join Dr. Shakila Tanjim for an engaging discussion on mental health\, during Mental Health Month\, while walking around Washburn University. The Stormont Vail Health Paw Squad therapy dogs will also be there! Participants should meet at the east side of Lee Arena. \n\n\n\nThe walk is open to the community. Participation is free and pre-registration is not required. \n\n\n\nAccording to the American Heart Association\, walking as little as 30 minutes a day can provide the following benefits: \n\n\n\nImprove blood pressure and blood sugar levels \n\n\n\nHelp maintain a healthy body weight and lower the risk of obesity \n\n\n\nEnhance mental well-being \n\n\n\nReduce the risk of osteoporosis Walk with a Doc (WWAD) is an international non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire communities through movement and conversation.
