DESCRIPTION:Event has been moved indoors \n\n\n\nStormont Vail Health is encouraging Topeka residents to take a step toward better health during Walk with a Doc\, a health program that brings doctors and patients together to walk Saturday\, Feb. 17\, 2024 from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. Attendees should park in the Lee Arena parking lot and meet inside due to weather.   \n\n\n\nWalk with a Doc (WWAD) is an international non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire communities through movement and conversation. \n\n\n\nThe Walk is free\, open to the community\, and pre-registration is not required. Walkers are encouraged to wear RED this Saturday and will enjoy a walk with Stormont Vail’s\, Dr. Nikhil Mehta\, who will provide support to participants\, answer questions during the walk\, and have a brief discussion about heart care\, heart healthy habits\, and more before the walk.

DESCRIPTION:Stormont Vail Health is proud to partner with the 70th Brown Anniversary Coalition to present “The Health of the BIPOC Community: A Discussion on Gun Violence\,” a free community forum open to the public. \n\n\n\nDuring this evening of healing and hope\, presenters will: \n\n\n\n\nDescribe how historical structural inequities manifest today as healthcare disparities\n\n\n\nDiscuss the intersection of gun violence and healthcare\, including mental health\n\n\n\nRelate the financial impact of gun violence and entities that may profit\n\n\n\nDescribe the ways gun violence impacts individuals and communities\, including locally\n\n\n\nIdentify local initiatives working to reduce gun violence\, and how individuals and professionals can take action\n\n\n\n\nThis forum features keynote speaker Dr. Brian Williams\, a nationally recognized leader on the intersection of public policy and structural racism\, gun violence\, and health equity. He is also a trauma surgeon\, author of The Bodies Keep Coming: Dispatches from a Black Trauma Surgeon on Racism\, Violence\, and How We Heal\, and an Air Force Academy alumnus and former congressional health policy advisor. \n\n\n\nIn addition to Dr. Williams’s remarks\, regional speakers will provide valuable insights into gun violence’s effects from the perspectives of a care provider\, victim\, family member\, mental health professional\, and community activist.
